India’s half-hour zone dates back to colonial rule of India and the era when ever-faster steamships and trains were shrinking the world. The start of the 20th century saw some push from scientific associations to calibrate India’s time to GMT. That recommendation was rejected by the colonial government, which opted for a unified time that sat squarely in the middle: five and a half hours ahead of GMT. In 2015, North Korea moved out of sync with South Korea by creating “Pyongyang Time,” putting the country eight and a half hours ahead of GMT instead of nine. India’s colonial-era time zone decision making, however, reflected a chorus of political, scientific and commercial voices both from within the government and outside of it, Gordon says.

CNN —Authorities in southern California have arrested five men in connection to the grisly killings of six people discovered shot – and some of whom were also burned – last week in a remote area of the Mojave Desert. The killings appear to be connected to illegal marijuana, authorities said, though they did not release many details, as the case is being reviewed by the district attorney’s office. Warrick said the man told them in Spanish he had been shot but did not know where he was. Authorities served multiple search warrants throughout the investigation and recovered several firearms and other evidence, the news release said. “We are confident that this appears to be a dispute over marijuana, which resulted in the murders,” Warrick said.

In a survey of jobs Americans would most like to see replaced by robots, the umpire would surely rank near the top. (The MLB league official tells me that legalized gambling has not been a factor in implementing ABS.) Frustratingly, the subjective has infiltrated what initially felt like a technological problem: What does the perfect strike zone even look like anyway? The MLB league official agrees, telling me the Jetson Robot Home Plate Ump is not in their plans. "Growing up, my parents would go, 'Oh, the umpire's strike zone was small!'

Opinion: The Deep Space Network is in trouble
  + stars: | 2023-09-11 | by ( Opinion Don Lincoln | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +6 min
The Deep Space Network, or DSN, is an interconnected set of three radio telescope facilities spread across the globe. Indeed, without the DSN, NASA’s robotic exploration of deep space would simply not be possible. On the contrary, if humanity is going to once again venture into deep space, it will be crucial to be able to maintain a radio link with those intrepid explorers. Both of those missions, indeed all deep space programs, depend on reliable communication, or they will fail. The Deep Space Network is NASA’s link to the planets, and it needs additional support if we ever hope to boldly go where no one has gone before.

BEIJING, April 23 (Reuters) - China's Vice Foreign Minister Sun Weidong has lodged solemn representations with the South Korean ambassador over "erroneous" remarks by the South Korean president about Taiwan, China's foreign ministry said on Sunday. "The Taiwan issue is not simply an issue between China and Taiwan but, like the issue of North Korea, it is a global issue," Yoon said. Yoon's remarks are "totally unacceptable," Sun said, according to a Chinese foreign ministry statement. "The South Korean leader made no mention of the One China principle, but equated the Taiwan issue with the Korean Peninsula issue," Sun said. Sun's complaint followed criticism from the Chinese foreign ministry last week that South Korea should "prudently" handle matters related to Taiwan.

Authorities say it's a miracle two people had only minor injuries after their vehicle plunged hundreds of feet off the road and into a canyon Tuesday in California. A man and a woman in their early 20s fell about 300 feet when their vehicle veered off the road into Monkey Canyon in Angeles National Forest, about 30 miles northeast of downtown Los Angeles, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Sgt. “Nearly all of the vehicles that go over the side of the road in that particular area turn out to be fatalities. Had it not been for the smartphone technology, Gilbert said, the two risked hypothermia, because temperatures were expected to drop into the 30s overnight. The sheriff’s department’s Special Enforcement Bureau tweeted dramatic video and photos of the rescue.
Arthur Kuan is the 31-year-old CEO of CG Oncology, a startup focused on treating bladder cancer. CG announced earlier this week that it has raised $120 million, despite a difficult biotech market. Since 2016, the year that Kuan became the CEO of CG Oncology, the Irvine, California-based cancer startup has raised big rounds from investors. "I think I've seen a lot of successful stories where you've stayed very focused on just one thing and you just see things that others don't by being very deep," Kuan told Insider. But when his father died that same year from pancreatic cancer, Kuan said he decided to focus on bladder cancer.
Apple recently introduced crash detection for iPhone 14 and Apple Watch. Crash detection is calling 911 when users go on roller coaster rides, WSJ and Coaster101 report. The feature, which works on the new iPhone 14 and Apple Watches, is supposed to detect severe car crashes, and help users reach emergency services. Emergency services responded to the park, but didn't see any such incident, per a 911 report cited by the Journal. The Warren County Communications Center, which received the call, gave the Journal six such recordings of unnecessary crash detection calls it received, spurred by rides at Kings Island.
